Silhouettes Style

When choosing a shape for you bridal gown, the silhouette should be one that is flattering to your figure. Finding the silhouette that suits your figure best comes down to trial and error, of trying different styles and seeing what suits your figure best. No matter what your build or figure you will ultimately find that several styles are most appropriate for you and bring out your best features. Below are descriptions of the five most common gown styles used for bridal gowns.

A-Line
The A-line style is perfect for brides looking for a slimming shape that can hide a few flaws. A-Line is the most figure-flattering silhouette featuring vertical seams flowing from the shoulders down to a flared skirt, creating a an "A" shape. This style suits most people, and is the most popular choice for wedding dresses.

Ball Gown

The Ball Gown silhouette is the traditional bridal gown style, which features a full bodice with natural waistline, well defined across and full skirted. The Ball Gown suits most body shapes and is ideal for drawing eyes to your face, collarbones and waist -- and hiding troublesome hips. This style of skirt is often combined with a fitted bodice and natural or dropped waistline, suiting a wide range of figures especially those with curves.

Empire

The Empire line dress is for brides who don't want a figure-hugging gown. The empire silhouette features a high waistline (directly under the bust) and a skirt that starts just below the cropped bodice. This style of dress suits a small-busted, slim figure, but can also be a good choice for pregnant brides, as the lack of waist means there's no constriction.

Mermaid
The mermaid silhouette is not a style that is suitable for every shape. The Mermaid silhouette features a narrow style that fits tightly to the body and a skirt that flares at the knee. This is probably one of the less comfortable styles available. This sexy silhouette is suited to brides who like to show off their curvy
shape.

Sheath
The Sheath is another body-fitting gown style, which is similar to the Mermaid style. The Sheath is a body-fitting gown with no defined waistline; similar to mermaid it does not flare at the knee. This style is comfortable to wear. Because it creates a clean, vertical line, it is particularly flattering to the short bride who wants to appear taller. The sleek sheath silhouette closely follows the line of the body. The slim profile closely follows the body's curves and looks flattering on tall, slim or petite brides.
