Sixty-nine years ago, it was love at first sight for Bob Hope and a young singer named Dolores Reade. According to an interview in the Desert Sun, Dolores has said that Bob often told folks that "it was love at first song."
After they were introduced to one another by George Murphy, Dolores told her mother that she had met her future husband. In the same interview, Dolores describes Bob as not only very good-looking, but very neat and very warm. They married three months later in Erie, Pennsylvania on February 19, 1934. They adopted four children, and enjoyed four grandchildren. The couple often toured together and spent a great deal of their time with one another on the road.
class="fWe remember hearing Bob and Dolores share many, many years ago on a television interview that they had some rough times in their marriage journey. They revealed that what kept them together was not only their love and respect for each other, but their firm belief in the vows they made to one another when they married. Unlike many celebrity marriages, there was no hint of scandal about the Hope household.
When the Desert Sun reporter asked Dolores about her long-term marriage, she responded, "It’s all been pretty good. It’s all been pretty good." Wouldn't it be great if we all could say that after 69 years of marriage?
